UNDERGRADUATE This model introduces new undergraduate programs which are characterised by both breadth and depth. These degrees ensure that you gain deep knowledge in your discipline but also require you to study 25% of your subjects from other disciplines. You are exposed to alternative areas of knowledge, different ways of understanding and varied methods of enquiry. There is also a focus on skills development – problem solving, communication, teamwork and leadership. POSTGRADUATE As a graduate student you may study for your Masters or Doctorate degrees and can choose from a wide range coursework and research possibilities. Our new Graduate Schools provide stimulating, supportive and professional environments. RESEARCH The University of Melbourne is the second largest research organisation in Australia. Our researchers are at the forefront of fields as diverse as human rights, art conservation and nanotechnology -  STUDY ABROADWe welcome many students into the study abroad program which allows you to study for a semester or two in an undergraduate course (and some postgraduate courses) while gaining credit for your degree at home - Melbourne Global Mobility – For Incoming Students In the undergraduate program you can choose from an enormous range of subjects which might include Australian studies, Asian studies, architecture and design, business, economics, engineering, languages, humanities, environmental studies, most sciences, social sciences, psychology, music and many more. Alternatively, you can concentrate on your specialty, such as business subjects. This residential program is conducted by local students and they soon have you knowing all the best places to go and things to do in the city and beyond. Study facilities include a number of attractive new student study centres, more than 20 specialist libraries, online library access and computer labs. The campus also provides a range of galleries, theatre and entertainment venues, shops and cafes. The Student Union is central to campus life and is home to over 140 clubs and societies. Sporting facilities include indoor swimming pool, gymnasiums, aerobics and yoga rooms, running tracks, courts and fields, as well as a rowing boatshed on the Yarra River and a ski lodge in the mountains. See video clips: Campus Video Studentlife Video MELBOURNE CITY The University is located only a short walk or tram ride from the city centre which is situated beside the Yarra River and close to the large Port Phillip Bay. Elegant tree-lined boulevards are surrounded by a mix of exciting modern buildings and older grand architecture from the 1880’s. It is Australia’s most cosmopolitan city and is home to people from over 100 different nations. This mix of cultures has brought wonderful social and cultural opportunities to the lifestyle found in Melbourne – from extensive cuisines in the many excellent restaurants and cafes to the range of festivals and events that are constantly happening. See video clip: Melbourne City Video ACCOMODATION There is a wide range of accommodation options both close to the University’s inner city environment and further away, such as by the bay. Public transport and bicycle lanes make it easy to access most areas. This year’s recipient of an Academic Merit Scholarship from Germany is Silvia Lausch Ten PhD students from Germany have also received scholarships. For more details see: Scholarships STUDENT EXPERIENCES  Simon Elchlepp - studying Master of Arts (Cinema Management)The most interesting aspect of my course is to work together with students and teachers that come from such different backgrounds, in terms of their cultural, professional and academic background (since the course is a mix of Cinema Studies and Arts Management). My course supervisor proves invaluable help concerning all my questions around my studies, and also in creating industry contacts for internships. Best things about Melbourne-
Sara Doering – studying Bachelor of Arts The whole concept of the Bachelor of Arts was a real revelation to me, encompassing so many subjects I was interested in: suddenly it was possible to combine Philosophy with Politics and Environmental Studies and even take, say, music as a breadth! The wide array of services is clearly impressive – for example there’s the Academic Skills Unit, where you can book individual tutorial sessions to get your essays checked for grammar and style, a service that I believe is absolutely essential for non-native speakers. However, I hardly ever notice the English language as being a barrier. The lectures are well taught, interesting and easy to follow and so are the tutorials. Another thing that thrills me is the vivid social life - I soon found myself being torn between joining the Environmental Collective, the Skiing Club (yes, you can go skiing in Australia!) the Chocolate Lovers Club, the Flare-dancers - or all of them at once.At the end of my first semester at the University of Melbourne I’m glad of the kangaroos and endless beaches that brought me here first! * The Times Higher World University Rankings, Times Higher Education Supplement, 2008 # Index of International Standing of Australian Public Universities, 2007  Studienfelder / Fakultäten - The University of Melbourne / Australien Undergraduate Study
